Our Environmental Initiatives
District Cooling Plant
Our District Cooling Plant (DCP) centralises cooling processes, enabling us to optimise energy consumption and resource efficiency at scale. In 2024, we completed the installation of our second DCP (DCP 2.0), and we plan to continue strengthening the efficiency of our cooling systems in preparation for the incremental cooling demand expected from our upcoming Waterfront project.
One of Singapore’s Largest Solar Panel Installations
With more than 5,000 panels in operation, our total solar capacity has increased fourfold since 2022. We continue to explore opportunities to further expand our solar installations.
Sustainable Infrastructure
We have 14 buildings certified BCA Green Mark GoldPlus and above, demonstrating our proactive approach to adopting innovative green building solutions to improve energy efficiency. Our latest achievements include:
- Platinum Zero Energy - Research and Learning Centre, and Illumination’s Minion Land at Universal Studios Singapore
- Platinum Super Low Energy - Hotel Ora, and The Laurus, a Luxury Collection Resort
- Platinum - WEAVE, Singapore Oceanarium, and Equarius Hotel
Diversity in Our Water Sources
We place strong emphasis on conserving water resources and reducing reliance on municipal water for our resort operations through multiple initiatives, including adopting alternative sources such as seawater, rainwater, and reclaimed water.
Cloud-based Building Management System
We implemented Singapore’s first large-scale cloud-based Building Management System (BMS) at RWS. This advanced BMS optimises energy monitoring and control of our facility assets, improving our energy efficiency.
2.9-hectare Preserved Forest
Our RWS Landscape team actively monitors the biodiversity of our coastal forest and conduct proactive measures to protect our local species. In 2023, a bird and butterfly survey identified 17 bird species and approximately 21 butterfly species, highlighting the thriving biodiversity within our protected coastal forest.
A Glimpse into RWS 2.0
Waterfront Lifestyle Complex
As RWS advances into its next stage of development, our Waterfront Lifestyle Complex – scheduled for completion by 2030 – will feature two luxury hotels, an immersive mountain trail, and a retail and dining podium, all designed with a strong focus on holistic sustainability. Targeting BCA Green Mark Super Low Energy certification, the complex will incorporate
- An intelligent Guest Room Management System (GRMS) that balances guest comfort with energy savings
- Sustainable building materials, such as low carbon concrete, with 90% of construction and demolition materials recycled
- Water conservation through rainwater harvesting and 3-tick Water Efficiency Labelling (WELS) water efficient fittings
Singapore Oceanarium and Research and Learning Centre
Singapore Oceanarium is a world-class institute combining live habitats, oceanic stories, and digital innovation to advance marine education, research, and the conservation of threatened species. Its Research and Learning Centre, RWS’ second BCA Green Mark Platinum Zero Energy Building, features learning labs and collaborative spaces for scientists, students, and the community. Additional solar installations have been installed across both facilities as part of our ongoing strategy to increase solar energy generation.
WEAVE
WEAVE at RWS, a modern lifestyle and community enclave, brings together international and local brands with exclusive first-in-Asia dining concepts, including Maison Pierre Hermé Paris and Moutarde by Paul Pairet. Certified BCA Green Mark Platinum, WEAVE integrates biophilic design, lush botanical landscapes, and distinctive asymmetrical shopfronts. Its advanced cooling system and ETFE canopy, which reduces heat radiation by 80%, further enhance energy efficiency and guest thermal comfort.
The Laurus, a Luxury Collection Resort, Singapore
The Laurus draws inspiration from the spirit of a well-travelled collector’s home, weaving together art, objects, and textures from diverse eras and cultures. Certified BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy, The Laurus features an intelligent Guest Room Management System (GRMS) that balances guest comfort with energy savings through detecting guest movement and providing real-time data analytics. Additionally, Laurus Table, helmed by Michelin-starred Italian Chef and Netflix star Fabrizio Ferrari, champions sustainable gastronomy. Inspired by Italy’s Amalfi Coast, the menu features fresh seafood from Singapore's local fish farms paired with organic regional produce and herbs handpicked daily from our garden.
